Will this be the opening shot of a war that goes down in history? One against the vile ideas of another time that these hateful people that Donald Trump’s america has rebranded as the alt-right. The ‘alt-right’ because it sells better than the former brand ‘White Supremacist’. Trump knows all about branding.
I don’t care if the opposition protesters were entirely peaceful. I have nothing but hatred against the Nazis and the KKK. There is nothing in either group, no margin of value to excuse their contemptible concepts of the world they wish to live in. Nothing to describe the imbecilic ignorance of their members. “whites made this country” as a statement one of them said in a recording I saw; sure on the backs of black slaves and next to muslims, jews, and people from many nations for several hundred years. Other than that an accurate statement.
What about freedom of speech? Well, what about it? Freedom of speech is not an unabridged freedom. Famously you can’t shout “Fire” in i crowded theatre, but inciting violence, plotting crimes, even talking about assassination of certain members of the government and the overthrow of the government are restricted as well.
Why would hate speech hold a special place and be unassailable? Germany, England and Canada are just a few of the countries that ban hate speech. There’s no particular reason for the US to not follow suite, the first amendment is not a particular barrier as it simply would be one of many restrictions.
Yet the greatest disappointment was Trump. In a rare opportunity to clearly distance himself from the haters he said “On many sides”. On many sides of what exactly? Who the f@*! is defending the Nazi and KKK positions on a moral ground? The answer? Absolutely nobody. This is the one case where Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians, Greens, Communists, Socialists will all agree. Nazis are bad. They are the epitome bad guy in the movie. George Lucas even modelled the Empire’s uniforms after the Wehrmacht uniforms (at least that’s my opinion).
Then I felt hope. I heard the Monday speech. Ah, at last a speech that names the groups. OK, a teleprompter, a written speech, but still. Then he does it again. “On many sides” f!@# this guy.
He’s supported by people who see me as a triple threat. I’m a Jew, I’m a woman, I’m trans, and I’m bi. OK I’m not sure if that’s three or four. I’m only missing being a person of color.
Come on republicans, wasn’t this embarrassing enough?
