How Silent Can We Be?

I fail to understand, I truly do. I lived through the 60s and 70s. I watched people march on Washington for civil rights for people of color, equal rights for women, against institutional and governmental injustice. I was called unpleasant names that are no longer acceptable in modern times.

Where are they now? The modern flower girls. At least we don’t have protesters being fired upon with live bullets as at Kent state. As back in 1932 when posse comitatus was broken as General Douglas MacArthur order Army troops on American soil to remove veterans only asking for the pay promised them by the federal government.

We have a president who on a nearly daily basis does something that  literally lowers our expectations of what we expect out of the oval office. I was upset at Reagan because he had cabinet officials under indictment, what I foolish person was I. If I only could have seen forward to today and seen the one who ran the White House with his children.

On election day I feared for my safety because a racist had been elected but then I reasoned that it was about the election. Many candidates play to the electorate but govern from the center. But I went ahead and changed my birth certificate anyway.

But then the death of a thousand cuts to LGBT+ rights began, and not the only such assault. I do not mean to say that the cause of immigrants where he wants to separate parents from children is not an important issue. I recognize the global threat of his impolitic moves on the world stage vs North Korea.

He wastes political capital on us. He takes away our hard won civil rights by telling the justice department not to pursue such cases. Will he succeed? What happens when the judiciary tells him that he can’t constitutionally demand the laws be selectively enforced? Will congress actually acceed when it is their sons and daughters in the noose?

He takes settled issues like trans people in the military and miraculously unites his enemies. People like me standing shoulder to shoulder with Orrin Hatch? The Family Research Council wringing their hands because he chose the worst possible issue to oppose trans people on. Service to their country. Literally being willing to bleed and die for it.

And the lies. He reflexively lies. I wouldn’t mind the usual sort that every politician commits, we expect to have duplicity, but he lies on objective facts. Worse, he succeeds in lying because people are apparently too dim to follow the actual facts. Video of him saying something is true followed by him saying he never said that.

How can there not be hundreds of thousands of protesters filling the streets of the capitol demanding his resignation.

I am not partisan in any particular way. I’m in favor of fair and effective government. We seem to have lost our way.
