Timelines

Not everyone progresses in a straightforward way from say male to female. There can be hiccups, detransitions, and decisions to go back to the status quo ante for any number of reasons.

For example, it is a really common pattern among cross dressers and even some trans individuals to periodically purge. They’ll build up a wardrobe, even a really substantial one and then one day drop it all off at Goodwill, forswearing any further dressing. As you’ve probably gathered from other posts, this doesn’t work. But at least they can follow the new trends!

Sometimes there’s a decision to deny reality to try and live a normalized life, such as my decision to date, marry and father a child. This may hold down the hatches for a while too, but isn’t likely to fix the problem.

People transition and find themselves unhappy with the consequences of their actions. They incur losses of community, family and friends and detransition to try and recapture their lost pass. However, like a mirage, those lost are gone despite their seeming closeness and no joy comes of detransitioning for such reasons. Eventually they retransition or perhaps, like sad Mike Penner who took his own life.

There isn’t one correct or standard path. Perhaps it is starting to be the case that the path is becoming smoother and more standard for the young, or perhaps not. Even the young, and even today it is no easy thing to transition.

  1. It is hoped that it will be easier for the next generation. I know I tried to transition in the 90’s and had to detransition after losing it all. In the end, you have to be you. I am two years full time and waiting on my surgery date. As my wife said, this time, there is no going back.
