I had a good friend at MITRE for some years. We continued to get together on occasion and shared our passions for woodworking and later piano. I remember the last lunch we had together fairly well. George was having health issues and shortly after went into the hospital. I lost touch with him perhaps because he wasn’t up to the effort of keeping in touch. He had loving people around him, his wife and son, so I didn’t worry too much about him.
But as years went by with no contact, I wondered what had become of him. I thought perhaps I had offended him, although that wasn’t his nature to hold a grudge over some minor comment. I finally this morning decided I really wanted to know what had happened, so I checked the obituaries and found him right away. Not, of course, a happy outcome but neither surprising given his health.
So, here’s to some very fine memories of George Huff and our friendship. I’m afraid I will lose many other friends this way over the coming years, it is a peril of growing old and surviving.
And as we say in Judaism may his memory always be a blessing.

May his memory always be a blessing.
