Why I Think our Current Treatment for Trans kids is Misguided

Until very recently, only a tiny minority of people identified as trans. People who said they were trans, if they got care. would generally have gender dysphoria. On top of this was a huge social stigma and social and peer pressure that actively kept many people from admitting to the problem. Understand that for those who are genuinely trans, and do suffer from dysphoria that this is a big deal and often lead to horrible situations that were responsible for destructive behaviors like drug abuse, physical assault, sexual assault, suicide and for those turned out their homes by abusive parents a need to make a living, which often is linked to prostitution in the sex trade.

Having treatment available for kids is really important. They need support from their parents to deal with this. They need support from the school system so they have access to the bathrooms for their target sex, and the government should help kids on the street get shelter. I also think that parents who turn children out should be punished for their part in the unlawful abandonment of their LGBT kids. And if these kids turn out to not be trans, which is the most common situation, they will not have had surgeries and hormone treatments and they will be able to go back to being their original sex, with no harm done, right? Not so quick. I wondered, why are all these states passing laws to [nb: edited 6/23/24] forbid trans treatment for kids? It turns out that we have ignoramuses filling our state houses. [disclaimer, I have no expertise in either medicine or psychiatric care.]

I think we should allow kids to experiment with gender as they grow up. They should have support from all to deal with the issues they are dealing with. I also think that we shouldn’t blindly accept a child’s self diagnosis. They should be approached with honesty. They should receive support from families and public institutions so they can, if appropriate receive support for a non medical transition (for those pre puberty .

You ask why is this really a problem. If an adult finds out that they have gender dysphoria and they want to transition, then it isn’t the business of the state to interfere. But with kids, we should try and avoid both extremes. Acceptance of those who’ve transitioned is an important one to work on.

We really should do something about the easy availability of hormones. Taking sex hormones without medical supervision means that kids who are not yet at a stage where their gender identity is stable have permanent changes are done to these kids despite the fact that most of them will not remain trans. It’s also hazardous and if the dose isn’t right the person not only will not receive optimal results, but can suffer from medical problems.

Some of these kids are being allowed to have surgeries that will make them permanently sterile, this seems pretty inappropriate for a situation that will resolve itself in most cases. This inappropriate treatment (WPATH says blockers at puberty and hormones at 16 subject to the therapists or other psychiatric practitioner, and similarly no top surgery before 17, nor reassignment surgery before 18.

Let me leave you with this thought. Children should receive love and support from their parents. This includes the willingness of the parent to be supportive if their male child declares that he wants to be a girl or vice versus. It is also a critical parents role to govern what a minor child is allowed to do. A parent has the responsibility to be at the table and set limits to what children are or aren’t allowed to do.

Support your lgbt friends. Support regulators who base their judgements on science based facts.
